Health officials surrounding the country carried on offering Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine this weekend after getting a green light from federal regulators on Friday. The US Food and Drug Administration and US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lifted their recommendation to put the shots to a halt after investigating reports of rare but potentially threatening blood clotting in certain recipients. On Friday, FDA and CDC officials stated that inoculations could continue due to their benefits outweighing their risks. The FDA provided updated informational guides that inform vaccine recipients and doctors of the risk of blood-clotting that initially has affected adult women under 50. The overall risk is about 1.9 cases per million people, though the risk is roughly 3.5 times higher for women of ages 18 to 49. The Indiana Department of Health stated that it began administering the J&J shot on Saturday and an additional 1,325 dose through the late afternoon on Sunday, stated a spokesman for Indiana University Health, which is helping run the site.
